Course objectives
Human space exploration has achieved extraordinary results in the past six decades and many challenges need to be addressed to ensure the success of future long-duration missions beyond low-Earth orbit (from cislunar modules, to the Moon village, the journey to Mars, and beyond). The main objective of the course is to present an advanced overview of space neuroscience basic and applied research, offering complementary and converging perspectives from the neurobiology, neurophysiology and neuropsychology scientific fields. The formal teaching and seminars by experts of the field will concentrate on the latest discoveries concerning the effects of space environmental conditions and hazards (e.g. radiation, microgravity, altered CO2, ICE environment) on central nervous system, as well as possible mitigation strategies.

Results of learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student is expected to demonstrate: I) knowledge and understanding of the major biological, physiological, cognitive and behavioral changes induced by space conditions in human beings; II) conceptual and analytical ability in analyzing the topics presented during the course, making judgments on them, and establishing relationships between factors and conditions encountered in space and psychological, cognitive/behavioral and neural changes; III) knowledge and understanding on the use of space analogs for experimental research; IV) skills in communicating in clear and exhaustive way the theoretical framework, method and findings of a scientific study and the ability to formulate in autonomy interpretations, ideas, and conclusions on the topics of the course.

Learning assessment methods
The exam will consist of two parts. The first will be the oral presentation of a paper focused on the topics of the Space neuropsychology program (in itinere test, maximum 15 points). The second, after course ending, will consist of a written essay, exposing one of the topics of the Space neurobiology module (maximum 7,5 points) and one of the Space neurophysiology module (maximum 7,5 points). The final score will be obtained as the summatory of the three scores.
