Course objectives

The course aims to treat the fundamental characteristics of the main diseases of the nervous system of neurosurgical interest. In particular, the main aspects concerning epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of neurodegenerative diseases, neuromuscular disorders, periodic neurological episodes, neuroimmunological disorders, vascular diseases and neuro-oncological pathologies will be investigated. The diagnostic technologies used in the clinical approach to these pathologies will also be analyzed, with particular regard to the development and use of molecular or high-tech biomarkers. The course will include a broad discussion of innovative biotechnological drugs developed for the treatment of neurological, with particular regard to recombinant proteins and nucleic acid sequences. The lessons will be completed by the discussion of technologies used for the treatment of neurovascular diseases, traumatic diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, for neurodegenerative diseases and for neuro-oncological diseases

Results of learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student must have developed a good knowledge and comprehension of the following scientific themes:

  • in-depth knowledge of the main aspects concerning epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of the most prevalent neurologic diseases including vascular diseases (stroke), neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, motoneuron diseases), neuroimmunological disorders (multiple sclerosis), periodic neurological episodes (migraine, epilepsy), neuromuscular disorders (myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophies), and neuro-oncological pathologies.
  • in-depth knowledge of the genetic basis on the main neurologic diseases that impair development, function and trophism of the nervous system.
  • In-depth knowledge of innovative biotechnological drugs developed for the treatment of neurologic diseases, with particular regard to recombinant proteins and nucleic acid sequences.

Course delivery

All the topics will be discussed mainly via frontal lessons. According to Unito suggestions, also online lessons will be available. Participation of the students to the lessons is mandatory

Learning assessment methods

Learning will be verified through a final exam including both written and oral examination. A frontal examination is required, unless transient Unito requirements. Written examination will be performed through a multiple choice test including 24 questions. A minimum score of 15/24 is required for the admittance at the oral examination. A maximum of additional 6 points will be provided by the oral examination.
