Course objectives
The goal of the course is three-fold.
First, a theoretical overview will be provided concerning the peripheral psychophysiological signals correlated to the human behavior. This theoretical overview will provide insight into:
- the interactions between psychological states and physiological responses;
- laboratory techniques and methodological principles in human psychophysiology
- foundations about the psychophysiological signals mostly employed in cognitive neuroscience (e.g., electrodermal activity; electromyographic activity; electroencephalographic activity)
Second, a practical, hands-on training in HST laboratories will be given concerning the acquisition of psychophysiological signals providing insight into the recording of following signals:
- electrodermal activity (held in psychophysiology lab)
- electromyographic activity (held in TMS lab)
- electroencephalographic activity (held in EEG lab)
Third, a practical training will be given concerning the pre-processing, analysis and interpretation of psychophysiological parameters. Specifically, the lecturer will provide knowledge about software packages that can be used (e.g., Matlab; ACQknowledge; Letswave; EEGLab)
- data-cleaning, filtering, epoch segmentation;
- analysis, by using ad hoc software;
- interpretation of the results

Results of learning outcomes
After the course students should have knowledge of the most common psychophysiological signals (e.g., electromyography, electrodermal activity, electroencephalography), their measurement, analysis, scoring, interpretation and of how to report findings for publication.

Learning assessment methods
The exam will consist of a multiple-choice written test with 31 questions (correct answer 1 point, wrong answer 0) about the topics addressed during the course. It will be carried out in 35 minutes.
